Happy New Year everyone! Isn’t it exciting that today is the first day of 2017! What is it about the New Year that makes it so special? I believe it is the time of year when we can all set out for a fresh start. When everything starts brand new again. It’s a clean slate with no mistake in it! It’s also a time of year for reflection and anticipation to discover what the new year will bring to you and me.
As New Year approaches I cannot help but reflect on the past year and think about how I can improve myself for the following year. A common tradition is to have New Year’s Resolutions. Have you made any New Year resolutions? I know most people don’t anymore as new year’s resolutions can be tricky. When I say tricky, I mean we work on them for a few days and than somehow it gets thrown aside.
One of the reason why I think we fail at our resolutions is because we set too many goals and it becomes overwhelming. So this year I am only going to set one goal. That’s right! Just one goal. But it’s a tough one! It’s OBEDIENCE!
Three times throughout 2016, John 2: 1-11 came to me. It tells of Jesus’ first miracle of turning water into wine. For those who are not familiar with the story, Jesus and his disciples were at a wedding in Cana when Mary, Jesus’ mom, informed him that they had ran out of wine. This would have caused significant humiliation to the groom’s family. Mary must have been close to the family because she felt that she had to rectify the situation and ordered the servants to do whatever Jesus tells them to do. Jesus sees the 6 large stone water jars, typically used for ceremonial washing, and asked the servants to fill them with water. Then Jesus tells them to draw some of the water out and give it to the master of the banquet as a taste test. When the master of the banquet tastes it, he was floored because it was the BEST wine he has ever tasted.
What amazing obedience the servants displayed! When Jesus told them to fill the stone jars with water and to serve it as wine, they must have thought that Jesus was out of his mind! Could they have lost their job masquerading water as wine? I don’t know. All I know is that they obeyed. Through their obedience they were able to be a part of something very special. They got to be a part of a miracle! Jesus’ first miracle!
And what about the wine? Jesus didn’t just give them any regular wine. It was the BEST wine. God blessed them with the very best. God wants to give us the very best too! He wants us to trust and obey Him so we can also be blessed with His goodness.
Many times I ask God to give me a miracle. Yet, I grumble and refuse to obey what He is telling me to do. I tell myself that I am not capable of it or I simply ignore it or, worse yet, I think God is crazy to ask me to do this. Obedience is difficult. But obedience is also what makes the impossible become a reality.
So for 2017, if you haven’t made a resolution or if you want to add another one, I encourage you to follow me in choosing to obeying God with all our hearts, body and soul. It will not be an easy task. We will have to give up our own desires to fulfill God’s desire. Furthermore, we may not fully understand the reasons behind why God is telling us to do what He wants us to do; but, know that God’s goodness is in store for us when we give Him our full obedience.
If you do decide to take this challenge, let me know so that I can pray for you. And may I ask you to pray for me too! Pray that God will grant you and me strength to trust in Him. In doing so, we may have the ability to fully obey Him!
Happy New Year! Wising you all a year full of joy and rich blessings!
